Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend ASAE’s CEO Symposium with one of our clients. The experience, led by Tecker International, LLC, offered valuable insights into strengthening board leadership and governance. One key message resonated deeply: “The association leadership experience is a group experience and a group responsibility.”

Success, we learned, hinges on clearly defined and mutually agreed-upon expectations.

A major takeaway was the importance of board self-assessments. These tools help boards evaluate how effectively they’re operating and whether the culture they’ve cultivated supports organizational excellence. Fortunately, many accessible tools exist to facilitate this process, making it easy to implement and act upon. The Barcami Lane, Inc. team can certainly provide options for our clients to consider.

Another critical concept was understanding where a board sits on the continuum between operational and strategic leadership. Boards must honestly assess their current position, define where they want to be, and develop a plan to evolve. As organizations grow, boards should shift from managing day-to-day operations to focusing on governance — empowering professional staff to handle management responsibilities.

Ultimately, the symposium reinforced that high-performing boards are intentional about their development. Through self-assessment and strategic evolution, they create the conditions for long-term success.

Until next time!
