Rest is Best

A few days ago, I came across a simple sentence on LinkedIn: “Rest is not optional.”

It made me pause. Even now, far too many leaders treat recovery as a reward to be earned or an afterthought when the calendar permits—rather than what it truly is: a core strategic discipline.

Rest is where growth actually happens.

Without intentional pauses to step back, reflect, and think creatively, speed is meaningless. You are simply running fast in an arbitrary direction. Whether renewal looks like a fifteen-minute walk to clear your head or completely disconnecting your inbox for a long weekend, intentional downtime isn’t downtime at all—it is maintenance for high-impact decision-making.

Grinding through exhaustion into achievement is an outdated playbook. It rarely produces enduring success, and it almost always exacts a hidden toll on culture and retention.

At Barcami Lane, we talk often about strategic alignment, governance, and operational resilience. None of those systems function well if the people steering them are operating on fumes. We believe sustainable leadership begins with sustainable habits: slowing down is often the exact prerequisite needed to move forward faster, with greater clarity and purpose.

When we model intentional recovery as leaders, two vital things happen:

  • We set a healthy cultural benchmark: We demonstrate to our teams that presence and perspective matter far more than performative hustle.

  • We create space for others to lead: Stepping back naturally empowers emerging talent to step forward, own outcomes, and shine.

Protect your time to recharge. Your clarity, your team, and your best strategic work depend on it.
